Funny kids!

The kids have said some funny stuff lately.

Mom and the Volcano
When Ken arrived home from work the other day, Camille proudly showed him her latest piece of art, which was of a volcano. Ken then asked her what she drew inside the volcano and she replied, "oh, that's Mommy!" Ken just nodded and said, "Wow! Tough day as a stay-at-home-mom, huh?"

The joys of TV
After sleeping in for a bit, I went downstairs and found that the girls had the TV on.  This is unusual as we only let them watch TV on the weekends and we supervise what they watch very closely.  I asked them what they were watching and Camille said, “oh, this is for your skin!”  Sure enough, they were watching a Cyndi Crawford infomercial for skin care!  Some days they’re way too funny!
Meghan teaches Mom about strangers
As we were leaving school after dropping off Camille, a mailman pulled up in front of our van.  I engaged in some small talk with him.  When I was putting Meg into her carseat she asks, “Mom, why were you talking to that mailman?”
I said, “well, he seemed like a nice man.”
Meg replied, “you know Mom, you can’t be too careful these days!”
Ah!  Important lesson from the mouth of an almost 3 year old!

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...we have mild snow flurries.  Today is a little colder than the last two days.  The girls really enjoyed playing outside after school.  Unfortunately, Meghan doesn't tolerate the temperature below 32 degrees so she has not been out much in January.

I am thinking...about baby names.  Our child is still nameless.  This fact is stressing me out more than a little bit.

I am thankful...that Meghan's whining has subsided.  I started sending to her room for a nap every time she started fussing, and she seems to have changed her behavior in response.

In the kitchen...we are on day two of a three-day cookie baking project.  Last night I whipped up the dough. Today we rolled the dough, cut out heart shaped cookies and baked them.  Tomorrow we will decorate them.  Uh-oh...I just noticed Meghan stole a cookie off the counter.  (She is getting taller at last!)

I am wearing...something warm!

I am creating...some "community helper" vests for the preschool.  I started them in October with my mom's help and have not touched them since.  Now that the Christmas projects are done, I should probably finish them!

I am going...to take Camille to Irish dance tonight.  She loves it, and I love that it wears her out!

I am reading...The Temperament God Gave You.  I was actually reading it while I went to the gym, but I have not been in several weeks.

I am looking forward to...March?...April?...not being pregnant anymore :-)

Around the house...we almost have everything put back together from my prolonged illness.  I spent all of last weekend gathering things for the thrift store.  I came up with 3 pretty big boxes of items to give away.

I am pondering...whether or not to have a St. Patrick's Day party.  We have always had one, but I will be 36 weeks pregnant by then.  I don't think I have the energy...

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...is checking on the girls before I go to sleep.  They share a room now and look so angelic when they're silent and sleeping.  Meghan really is growing (almost 23lbs now!) and takes up more and more of her twin bed.  Camille has been exhausted most evenings due to a lot of outside play, hard work at preschool, and dance.  Seeing her sleeping in bed makes me chuckle because she looks like she fell in completely spent from a hard day!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Pray and play at the Cathedral later this week and we're going to a feis (Irish dance competition) at the Mall of America on Saturday to watch the dancers from Camille's school.  Camille is disappointed she isn't ready for her first dance in public yet.

...I better type faster...Meghan just stole another cookie!

A peek into my day...

Meghan wanted to get in on the picture, too!  (Pardon the bare legs...potty training is still in progress.)

Happy 5th Birthday, Camille!

Turning 5 is a very big deal.  Camille has been the most patient young lady.  She went to preschool this year and witnessed every single one of her classmates turn 5 before her.  As she left the house very early this AM for her day at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, she had the most enormous smile on her face.  This little girl had won the biggest lottery of all.  At last she was five!  Camille had a very busy year.

She wore make-up.
She gained the poise of a ballerina.
She held hands with famous people…err characters.

She rode turtles…and visited the zoo several times.
She had a Smurfin’ Halloween.
She made new friends.

She did a LOT of arts and crafts.
She hung out with princesses.
She showed off her wacky side.
…and her other wacky side.
She was a fantastic big sister to her “best buddy”.
She embraced living closer to her cousins.
She lovingly welcomed her newest cousin.
She completed an entire year of preschool in spite of being almost completely deaf for 3 months.
She danced like no one was watching.
She loved with all her heart.
She embarked on adventure after adventure.
We love you so much, Camille.  You are the princess of our tower.
You are beautiful inside and out!
Happy 5th Birthday!

Swimming Lessons!

Camille started swimming lessons this week.  I took a couple pictures on her first day.  She's the 3rd child from the left.

Here is what Camille has to say about swimming lessons:
"I want to tell Makaela about my swimming lessons once our house gets sold."  I guess these two sweet girls are going to have a reunion!
"I want to tell Aunt Becky that I won't go too deep and my teacher's name is Sarah, just like your best friend."
I asked Camille if she wanted to tell everyone what she does and swimming lessons, but the response was "I don't know."

There you have it, folks!  Camille misses her friends from Gainesville and her Aunt Becky!

Sisters!

After several demands for pictures of the girls, I finally uploaded a few.

Camille's legs are not actually as long as they look; just a camera optical illusion.

Last week Camille asked me if she could drive the car at the grocery store with her "best friend, Meghan".

Who knew grocery shopping could be so much fun?!

Meghan liked to yell out the window at the passing shoppers!

The Tooth Fairy Prefers Crown Royal

Camille is growing up way too quickly.  A few weeks ago, she fell in the living room and knocked out her front tooth.  We weren't prepared for the tooth fairy as we weren't expecting her for another 2 to 3 years!  Ken and I scrambled to find a suitable pouch for the tooth.  Fortunately, we had recently gotten a small sample of Crown Royal that came in a little gold-lined purple pouch.  The pouch was perfect!

After Camille went to sleep, Ken and I debated over what the tooth fairy would bring.  I felt that a quarter would be sufficient given that Camille is just beginning to understand money and I didn't really want her to play with coins for fear that Meghan would eat them.  Ken felt something more impressive was required as he was given a silver dollar by his tooth fairy.  He decided to give her a silver coin I had received as a kid from my uncle.

The next day Camille totally forgot to check and see what the tooth fairy brought her.  When Ken came home from work he encouraged her to look in the bag.  She took out the piece of silver and shrieked, "it's a penny!"  After about 10 minutes of her dropping the heavy coin on the hardwood, the coin was tucked back away and the Tooth Fairy's gift was soon forgotten.

We had to take Camille to the dentist for an x-ray to make sure the entire tooth came out and to make sure her other top front tooth wasn't broken as it was wiggly.  Fortunately, all was well and we're trying to salvage the other tooth so she won't be completely toothless before kindergarten.  As it is right now, she'll be missing a tooth for another 3 years!

We saw Santa!

Saturday morning we dressed the girls in their Christmas outfits and went to see Santa.  Unlike past years, no tears were shed.

Soccer Progress

Camille is now in the midst of soccer season.  Their first game went well.  Camille missed soccer last week because we were out of town.  Today I had to serve breakfast at a local restaurant as a fundraiser for SAI.  Meghan tagged along and was doted on by all the other ladies.  Meanwhile, Camille and Ken were off to soccer practice.  Meghan and I caught the last few minutes of Camille's soccer game.  When we arrived, only 2 kids from our team and at least 4 kids from the other team were on the field.  Apparently our kids didn't feel much like playing today.  Oh well, we'll try again next week!  Here are some cute pictures of the team from a few weeks ago.

Counting My Blessings

Camille's Sisterly Love...This morning I woke up to the sound of this sweet little girl singing "Twinkle, twinkle, little star".  Ken left for work early and somehow Camille had silently made her way into our bed.  When I heard her singing, I opened my eyes to find Camille with her arm around Meghan (who was sleeping in my arms) singing a song to her little sister.

The Blessed Virgin...What would I do without Mary?  Since Meghan was about 2 months old, she has screamed every night from 7 to 8PM.  This has truly tested my patience and made going back to work particularly difficult for me.  Finally last week after a particularly trying night, I turned to the Blessed Virgin.  After just one decade of the rosary, not only did Meghan stop screaming, but she was peacefully asleep!  Every night since then, one decade of the rosary lulls Meghan to sleep, and we finally have peace in our house.

My SAI sisters...On Sunday I went to a pot-luck for the music fraternity I belong to.  During the "meeting" portion of the night, I mentioned that I was hoping to purchase a piano in the next year, preferred an upright grand, and was looking to pay no more than $500 for it.  These women are very active in the music community, and I frequently hear about grandmothers giving away pianos right after they've given them away, of course.  We just so happened to have a new member join our group that night who had moved here from New Jersey.  She squealed when she heard what I was looking for.  It turns out she moved her upright grand piano here, but the movers could not get it up to her 3rd floor apartment.  She was paying more than $100 a month to keep it in a storage facility and desparately needed to sell the piano.  Sometimes God just brings us together!  Pictures of my new piano will be coming soon!
